Many patients are nervous about medical procedures because they worry about pain or anxiety. Pro-Nox™ offers a safe, self-administered option to help many patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during select in-office treatments.
Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions about Pro-Nox™.
What is Pro-Nox™?
Pro-Nox™ is an FDA-cleared analgesia delivery system that provides a fixed 50/50 blend of nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") and oxygen. It is designed to help reduce discomfort, stress, and anxiety during medical and aesthetic procedures while allowing patients to remain awake and responsive.
How does Pro-Nox™ work?
You hold the mouthpiece or mask yourself and inhale the gas only when you feel you need it. Because the system is patient-controlled, you decide when to breathe it in during your procedure. The effects begin within a few breaths and wear off quickly once you stop inhaling.
Will Pro-Nox™ put me to sleep?
No.
Unlike general anesthesia or IV sedation, Pro-Nox does not put you to sleep. You remain awake, able to communicate with your provider, and can respond to instructions throughout your procedure.
What does Pro-Nox™ feel like?
Patients commonly describe feeling:
Some people become more talkative or giggly, while others simply feel more at ease.
Everyone's experience is different.
What procedures can Pro-Nox™ be used for?
Pro-Nox is commonly used during many office procedures, including:
Your provider will determine whether Pro-Nox is appropriate for your specific procedure.
Is Pro-Nox™ safe?
For appropriately selected patients, Pro-Nox has an excellent safety profile. Because the gas is self-administered and the effects wear off rapidly after use, it has become a widely used option for short office procedures. Your provider will review your medical history and determine whether it is appropriate for you.
How quickly does it work?
Most patients begin feeling the effects after approximately 5 to 7 breaths.
The calming and pain-relieving effects occur within minutes.
How long do the effects last?
The effects wear off quickly after you stop inhaling the gas.
Most patients return to their normal level of alertness within 10 to 15 minutes.
Can I drive myself home?
Many patients are able to drive themselves home after treatment because the effects typically resolve within minutes. However, your provider will assess how you are feeling before discharge and will let you know if you should arrange for someone else to drive you home. Follow your provider's specific instructions.
Does Pro-Nox™ completely eliminate pain?
No.
Pro-Nox helps reduce pain, anxiety, and stress, but it does not guarantee a pain-free experience. Many patients find that procedures are significantly more comfortable when Pro-Nox is used as part of their care.
Are there side effects?
Most side effects are mild and temporary.
Some patients may experience:
These symptoms typically resolve within minutes after treatment ends.
Who should not use Pro-Nox™?
Pro-Nox may not be appropriate for everyone. Your provider will review your health history before treatment.
It may not be recommended for patients with certain conditions, including:
Please tell your provider about all medical conditions, medications, and if you may be pregnant.
Will I receive needles or an IV?
No.
Pro-Nox does not require an IV. You simply breathe through the mouthpiece or mask during your procedure.
Can Pro-Nox™ be used with local anesthetic?
Yes.
Many procedures combine Pro-Nox with a local anesthetic to improve comfort. Your provider will recommend the most appropriate pain management plan for your procedure.
Is Pro-Nox™ covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by insurance plan and the procedure being performed.
In many practices, Pro-Nox is considered an elective comfort option and may involve an additional fee. Our staff will discuss any applicable charges before your procedure.
